Fix a bad answer in three moves

When the answer is vague, wrong, or just not what you wanted, do not start over. Three small moves usually fix it — with the exact things to say.

A bad answer is a starting point, not a dead end

Most people, when an AI gives a weak answer, either give up or rewrite the whole thing from scratch. Neither is necessary. A first answer is a draft, and getting it right is usually just a short back-and-forth. The trick is to tell the AI what was wrong with what it gave you — clearly and specifically — instead of vaguely asking it to 'try again'. Three moves cover almost every case.

Move 1 — Say what is wrong with it

Do not just say 'no, redo that'. Tell it exactly what missed, and it will usually fix it in one go.

Point at the problem

That is not quite right. The problem is that it is too formal, and it left out the delivery dates. Keep what works, and fix just that.

Swap the middle sentence for what is actually wrong — too long, too vague, misunderstood the ask, missed a point. 'Keep what works' matters: otherwise it often throws away the good parts along with the bad.

Move 2 — Show it what good looks like

If it keeps missing your tone or style, stop describing it and show an example. AI copies examples far better than it follows adjectives.

Give it a model to match

Here is the style I want, as an example: [paste a sentence or short piece you like]. Now redo your answer so it matches this tone and length.

One good example beats ten words like 'warmer' or 'more professional'.

Move 3 — Make it critique its own work

For anything important, get the AI to check its own answer before you do. It often catches its own weak spots when asked directly.

Ask it to find the flaws

Before I use this, look at your own answer and tell me the three weakest parts and how you would improve them. Then give me the improved version.

The pattern underneath

Notice what all three have in common: you are being specific about what you want, instead of hoping the AI guesses. That is the whole skill — a short, clear back-and-forth beats one perfect prompt almost every time. If you find yourself on the fourth or fifth try, though, start fresh: sometimes the first prompt was so far off that patching it is slower than a clean start.
